On January 14th, the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkariya made a ruling to close the Council of Elders of the Balkan People as an extremist organization. As reported earlier, the prosecutor-general of Kabardino-Balkariya, Mr. Oleg Zharikov, called for shutting down the Council of Elders of the Balkan People as a public organization engaged in extremist activity. The prosecutor-general based the charges on the claims, made by the Council, which described economic and social-economic conditions in the republic and alleged discriminating practices by the authorities against ethnic Balkars and infringement on their constitutional rights.

By 7:00pm on January 9th 2008, 87,340 official statements had been collected from citizens of Ingushetia claiming their non-participation in the Russia’s State Duma elections on December 2. The number of statements, denying having cast the ballot, constitutes 54.5% of the electorate in Ingushetia, contrary to the authorities’ official claim of 98% voter turnout and a land sliding victory of the United Russia Party in the republic.
