According to the poll, conducted by the Rostov-on-Don office of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 43% of the interviewed young people in Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions picked unemployment as the most disconcerting concern. The analysts suggest that primarily the economic situation is responsible for radical attitudes among the youths in the South Federal District. The study also showed that young people in the titular republics are more tolerant than their counterparts in Stavropol and Krasnodar regions, while the interviewed in Krasnodar and Stavropol regions have a stronger self-identification as Russian citizens than do the young people in Dagestan and Karachay-Cherkessia.

The Moscow Times journalist, Yulia Latynina, refuted the statement by Arkady Edelev of Russia’s Interior Ministry on May 17, 2008 with respect to rebels having received a new portion of funds to finance their activity. Ms. Latynina noted that the rebel activity in Chechnya and Ingushetia seem to intensify following large sums of ransom paid to rebels for release of hostages. The journalist suggested that the unusually high level of rebel activity in the spring 2008 was the result of the large ransom paid for the release of President Zyazikov’s uncle in October 2007, although the authorities deny paying ransom.
